Medical suppliers looking to outsource but that still need control over processed may be interested in Milford Manufacturing Services (Milford, MA). The company uses an electronics manufacturing service (EMS) production approach to contract manufacturing. It offers a virtual extended manufacturing portal called The Looking Glass that provides OEMs with a start-to-finish system to access their project. Designed for low-volume, high-mix production, the system allows OEMs to change dates and quantities instantly. Manufacturers have direct control over managing the development of their products, as well as moving products overseas and fulfilling legacy and build-to-order needs. Using Milford’s Looking Glass technology, Haemonetics (Braintree, MA) reports a 20% increase in productivity.

"CPG manufacturing is most likely to go offshore, because price and volume are so critical," said Doug Voiland, general manager of Milford Manufacturing Services. "Prototype, pilot production, mature, or legacy (end-of-life) product lines, and low-volume, high-mix products stay domestically. We specialize in products that are a coin flip—where demand doesn't justify going offshore. Our customers can do a redesign on the fly and save costs getting product to market." Milford Manufacturing Services is a contract manufacturer located in Milford, Mass., that supplies circuit boards and electronic components to CPG OEMs. "We offer our Looking Glass infrastructure to restore information management to OEMs," he explained. "The software, accessible by browser, gives them a hands-on view of product going through manufacture. One of our customers has streaming video showing the wave solder process for a very critical procedure." "Contracting manufacturing has been going on for 15 to 20 years, beginning with IBM and Digital Equipment. But because we're able to offer this level of visibility and [because of domestic location] offer speedier product to market, we can compete."

The Looking Glass 2.0
is said to allow OEMs to determine how to best use contract manufacturing resources when forecasting demand or responding to an identified need for additional product within the market. OEMs, in a self-service module through The Looking Glass, can determine delivery on a new production order based on standard requirements, such as the date, quantity or both. OEMs also can immediately place new orders if all materials and capacity requirements are met, and work jointly with the company if system constraints are identified

The introduction of efficiencies
in electronics anufacturing services (EMS) has significant cost-saving implications. Faster, coordinated line operations; rapid logistical response from suppliers and distributors; and more accurate data are just a few examples of the ways electronic manufacturers have improved operations. A global provider of end-to-end infrastructure availability solutions, who is accustomed to working with contract manufacturers for a wide range of manufacturing needs, has found the virtual portal to be a catalyst in how they manage and think about outsourced manufacturing projects. The firm's manufacturing engineer now has immediate, direct access to information from the manufacturing floor to the supply chain, including the number of projects running, total number of purchase orders, as well as highly specific information such as what's the status of a particular project.

The Looking Glass™ 2.0 now affords OEMs the unique and direct opportunity to determine how to best use contract manufacturing resources when forecasting demand or responding to an identified need for additional product within the market.
